Having the ability to match letters and sounds helps children acquire the necessary understanding of rhyming words and spelling patterns. The children will have the opportunity to learn through many strategies such as auditory, visual and hands on activities in this lesson.
Tasks:
1) The teacher will read the story The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Suess during large group activity.
2) Students will be encouraged to create silly rhymes by experimenting with rhyming word families during work time on the computer utilizing Bailey Book House Program "Three Letter Carnival" and "Read a Rhyme". (This will be child initiated activity).
3) Teachers and students will break up into two groups and play rhyming bingo during small group activity.
4) To extend the activity for home. This will be a resource for parents to reiterate rhyming families.http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/bll/reggie/home/index.htm
5) The second day during large group time teachers will review the different rhyming words. Then students will break up into groups of two each group will record their rhyming words on audacity. Afterwards we will replay the rhyming words from audacity and record them on the chalkboard.
